Leadership

Leadership is essential to the good work of a team because it is the way an individual works with others. Schermerhorn et al. (2010)1 saw leadership as a process of enabling people to achieve an organisational goal and a process of organising their activities towards that. Thus, a good leader can align the interests of others to facilitate the team to work towards an agreed vision which is ideal for the organisation.

Battista et al. (2023)2 listed leadership and social influence as one of the top 10 in-demand skills. It is also among the highest-growth skills in 5 years.

A survey on reskilling focus from 2023 to 2027
Figure 1 shows that 40% of the surveyed companies will reskill or upskill workers in leadership and social influence in the coming 5 years (Battista et al., 2023).

During the digital industry project, I engaged with the client and my teammates with leadership skills. I tried to understand the background, work styles, needs and goals of my client and teammates, set a shared vision and lead them through changes.

I measured my three listed leadership goals at then end of the project by how well I knew about each individual in person, how well I could identify the differences in each individual and thereby put them in a fit role to contribute to the project goal, and how positive the team viewed the challenges and changes after the project.

As the project manager, I successfully led the team to complete the marketing research. Also, we produced an insightful report that fulfilled the client’s requirements for targeting a secondary market. Our client rated our draft report as outstanding quality. Also, I received the following positive feedback from our tutor and my teammates.

Well done team 27 on producing a report that addresses the client’s requirements well and provides useful analysis. There is certainly solid evidence of both creative and critical thinking here, with both strong evaluation of the current situation and a logical critical approach along with original recommendations generated for addressing the challenges the client faces.

Figure 2 shows that most of my teammates regarded me as extremely skilled in leadership while I rated myself as very skilled.

Equipped with leadership skills, I am confident that I can promote good work ethics among peers and lead a team to perform quality data analytics work that informs future decisions of a company.
